Besides the natural beauty of the area, there are numerous attractions and activities to seek out. The Houw Hoek and Peregrine Farm Stalls are clearly visible from the N2, and offer a fine selection of wines and local delicacies. The Elgin Apple Museum, one of only two in the world, showcases the history of the thriving local apple industry.

The renowned Paul Cluver Estate is not only home to some of the region’s finest wines, but also a magical amphitheatre, where a towering Eucalyptus forest circles an intimate 600 seater-arena with seating hewn from farm timber.

Performances are specifically chosen to match the natural acoustics of the venue (for the latest programme see http://www.cluver.com/detailed-program).

Hiking trails, mountain bike trails and 4x4 routes abound in the region, which also offers (for the more adventurous) activities such as kloofing and cliff jumping. For those with green fingers, Duncan's Roses is a must, with its spectacular variety of roses, especially in November. The nearby Elgin Grabouw Country Club, situated on the banks of the huge Eikenhof Dam, often hosts local festivals (see www.countryclub.co.za).
